Use it in your Tesla

  1. Open this page in the Tesla browser while parked.
  2. Press Start engine and allow location access when asked. Without GPS the engine cannot rev: the sound follows your location / speed.
  3. Turn up the media volume. The engine follows your speed; accelerate harder for more revs.
  4. Stopped at a light? Hold Rev to blip the throttle.

Intensity controls how eagerly acceleration turns into throttle and how late it shifts. Character goes from a stock, muffled engine to a lumpy cam with open pipes and crackle. Crackle sets how much the exhaust pops and the engine misfires; 0% is a clean-running engine.

Test drive lets you hear the car without moving: press the Gas and Brake pedals (lower on the pedal presses harder; the top of Gas holds your speed), or play the demo run.

Compatibility

Location stays in this browser: it is only used to measure speed and is never sent anywhere.

Make your Tesla sound like a gas car, or something new

TeslaSound gives Tesla cars, and other electric cars, an engine or motor sound that follows your driving. Pick a gasoline engine that burbles at idle, revs as you accelerate, shifts gears and crackles when you lift off. Or pick an electric buzz, a made-up car that no factory ever built, or a new sound as we add more. Open teslasound.io in the Tesla browser and it plays live through the car speakers. No app to install, no account, no audio files.

Most fake engine noise just loops a recording. TeslaSound builds the sound in real time from your GPS speed. For the engines it models the firing order, exhaust pulses, intake roar and gearbox, so the revs follow what the car is really doing. The electric sound follows the motor speed and fades to a near-silent hum when you lift off and regenerate.

It runs in the browser of current Tesla models (Model 3, Model Y, Model S, Model X and Cybertruck) and in other EVs with a modern web browser. The Compatibility list above shows whether your browser supports it.

Sounds

More cars are on the way, both real and made-up. Tune each engine with Intensity, Character and Crackle, from a stock, muffled engine to open pipes with pops and bangs. On an electric car, Character makes the buzz grittier and brighter.

Questions

How do I make my Tesla sound like a gas car?

While parked, open teslasound.io in the Tesla browser, press Start engine and allow location access. Turn up the media volume and drive: the engine sound follows your speed. Bookmark the page so it is one tap away next time.

Does it play outside the car, like Boombox?

No. TeslaSound plays inside the car through the regular speakers, like music. A web page cannot use the external Boombox speaker.

Why does it need my location?

The engine noise is driven by your speed, and the browser measures speed with GPS. Your location stays in the browser and is never sent anywhere.

Is there a delay in the sound?

A short one. In a Tesla the revs follow your speed about half a second behind, and when you floor it or lift off, the engine responds after about a second. About a quarter of a second of that is the car's own audio system; the rest is because GPS only sees the car speed up after it happens. On a phone, GPS updates once a second, so the sound reacts after about 1.5 to 2 seconds.

Is it a recording of a real engine?

No. Every sound is synthesized live by our own code, so the engine reacts to each change in speed instead of looping a sample.

Does it work in other electric cars?

Yes, in any car with a modern web browser and location access. You can also use it on a phone connected to the car speakers by Bluetooth. Keep the page open: the sound stops when the browser goes to the background.

Is TeslaSound free?

You get 5 minutes of engine time free every day. TeslaSound Pro costs $3 per month plus tax for unlimited driving on up to 2 cars, and you can cancel any time.

How do I cancel my subscription?

All subscriptions, payments and cancellations are handled by our payment partner, Stripe. Open the subscription page and enter the email address you paid with. Stripe will email you a link to sign in, where you can cancel. You keep Pro until the end of the month you paid for, and you will not be charged again.

Can I use my subscription on my phone or another device?

Yes, no need to pay again. One subscription covers up to 2 devices, such as your car and your phone. Tap Redeem subscription under the Start engine button. The browser you paid with unlocks at once; on any other device, tap Add another device on a Pro device to get a one-time code and type it in. Step-by-step guide.
